WEIGH DOWN: HOW TO CONQUER EATING COMPULSIONS

Some people do not know that God can help them conquer the pull of the pantry. In the past, many skeptics did not believe we could conquer gravitational forces, either. We enjoy modern airplanes today, thanks to the aviators who went against all earthly reason and suffered man's scorn for their early failures, but who finally achieved manned flight. Likewise, there are many people flying above the magnetic pull of the refrigerator right now, despite early skepticism and ridicule directed at the Weigh Down Workshop''".

The law of sin (overeating, smoking, alcohol overindulgence, drug overindulgence, materialism, etc.) is somewhat like the law of gravity in that it is real, it is strong, it pulls you down, and it is a force that must be reckoned with. If you have never addressed this compelling force head-on, then you might have some bruises when you begin the process of overcoming. Strongholds are well named. You can ignore the law of gravity and come to an early death. In the same way, you can ignore this law of sin (the magnetic pull to the love of worldly things) and come to an early spiritual death.

Everyone has heard that God, through Jesus, set us free from the law of sin. So why are there so many people still in bondage?

Have you ever thought about how an eagle or a jet airliner can fly? My father loved to fly a single-engine airplane, and the only way we could soar above the clouds was for the right combination of lift and thrust to overcome the forces of load and drag.

Load and drag, respectively, result from gravity and air friction. Lift and thrust are the forward, spread-wing movements. The eagle uses its wings and its muscle power to provide lift and thrust to overcome gravity and friction. In a similar way, an airplane uses its wings and power from its engines. The lift and thrust we will discuss are symbolized in the following scripture:

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. (Romans 8:5-8)

Do you see a real key to flying above the gravity of sin or overeating? Focus. Focusing on what God wants. Do not focus on what the flesh or earthly nature wants; get your mind off the food. Every time your mind wanders to food, quickly take it off and ask God to help you focus on Him or His will. Leave the room if you have to. Open the Bible and read God's word. Eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full is possible when you focus on what God wants. You will be successful. And you will fly above the food. This means the gravitational pull of the food will be manageable because your mind is on the will of God. Focus is the key, your "lift and thrust." This can be applied to cigarettes, alcohol, antidepressants, diet pills, sexual lusts ... I can fill up the page with other worldly desires.

Focusing refers to several things: focusing on the long-term reward and not the short-term desire for food, focusing on what God wants rather than giving in to what the flesh wants, and concentrating on others in place of self. It is like teaching your children to save their money for later, for something that is bigger. We must set our minds on things above. It is just like the scripture that says those who wait in hope upon the Lord will soar on wings like eagles (Isaiah 40:31). Why? Because they are focusing upon the most important and leaving the less important behind.

I love the song that says, "Rise up, O men of God. Have done with lesser things. Give heart, and soul, and mind, and strength to serve the King of Kings." Do you know how to set your sights on the big things and have nothing to do with the lesser things? This focus that we are talking about is big stuff. In fact, as you get into it, you are going to see that all of this is bigger than you had anticipated. It affects the rest of your day.

Physical exercise is fine, but spend your mind and your strength on this mental exercise. Spend time reading, looking at the right things, praying, listening to Scripture or Weigh Down Workshop tapes, going to a Weigh Down class, and helping someone else in

class.

The way you fly and finally break away from the pull of the world is to focus on what our heavenly Father wants. Keep your mind centered every day by asking Him, "What do You want, God? Your will, not mine." Keep your mind off food!
