GUIDELINES TO MAKE SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION TO MAINTENANCE WITH ROTATION DIET: EAT NATURALLY DIURETIC FOODS

Some foods have a natural diuretic function. They stimulate your kidneys to rid your body of water, rather than close them down as do the salty foods just listed. Naturally diuretic foods tend to be relatively high in potassium content, compared with their sodium content.

Here is a list of foods that will help you get rid of excess water: apricot, asparagus, banana,

lean beef, broccoli, cantaloupe, chicken, cottage cheese, figs, grapefruit and grapefruit juice trimmed lamb, milk, skim and low fat unsalted nuts, fresh pineapple, potato; prunes and prune juice, oranges and orange juice, raisins, tomato, water packed tuna, turkey, watermelon.

The most effective ones seem to be fresh pineapple, asparagus, citrus fruits, and green vegetables. Combine these foods with lean meat and cottage cheese, and you can lose several pounds of water overnight.

One-day water-loss diet

Just in case you ever experience water retention, here is a day's menu that will get rid of several pounds of excess water. Women who experience periodic water retention find it particularly helpful, especially when it is combined with the daily exercise that I recommend. It will also do wonders for your mood since water retention is often associated with an increase in negative emotions such as depression.

Up to 1 pound of extra-lean beef, fish, or chicken, prepared without skin

Up to 2 cups of low-fat cottage cheese

Asparagus, broccoli, fresh pineapple or melon, and citrus fruits

You can use this diet for two days if necessary, and you can eat up to a full pound of lean meat, fish, or fowl and 2 cups of low-fat cottage cheese each day. You can also eat all the named fruits and vegetables, plainly cooked, in almost unlimited quantities. To be on the safe side, however, the first time you use the diet, try a serving each of two different vegetables, and a serving each of two different fruits. This will show you how well the diet can work for you when followed in its most perfect form.

If you have been retaining an extreme amount of water, you can lose 5 or more pounds on the One-Day Water-Loss Diet. Although I do not normally retain fluid, I have tried this diet after a big weekend and lost 3 3/4 pounds. The combination of a high protein content together with naturally diuretic fruits and vegetables does it. But do not use a diet such as this for more than two days. Over longer periods of time, you should eat a wide variety of foods to assure yourself of adequate nutrition.
