ANTIDOTES TO TOXIC BEHAVIOR: THE STEAMROLLER APPROACH - IF WE DEVELOP AT OUR OWN PACE—SATISFYING OUR NEEDS—WE WILL SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE TASK

A nourishing attitude (or antidote) about "work" emphasizes our belief that if we develop at our own pace—satisfying our needs—we will successfully complete the task. Such a belief eliminates the need for motivations such as deadlines and other external pressures. If we are willing to confront all the opposing, conflicting needs that divide our energies and concentrate on the most important, we can function effectively and almost effortlessly. The N person realistically confronts his options and makes choices according to his own needs. When an N person feels in conflict about what choice to make, he allows himself to flow with these inner needs as he experiences them. If he is restless and unable to concentrate on a task, and feels the need for exercise, he is willing to shift his attention to the latter need first. This is his inner reality—his most pressing need at the moment. Furthermore, when his need for exercise has been satisfied, the energy used to suppress it is then available to increase his attention on the work at hand. People who refuse to risk experimenting with this land of antidote to their work problems often lack trust in themselves and are fearful that following the flow of their own needs will simply lead from one self-indulgence to the next.
